Fifield Cos.’s Alta at K Station Becomes Largest Gold LEED-Certified Apartment Complex in the United States

CHICAGO (Feb. 22, 2011) – Chicago-based Fifield Companies and its joint-venture partner, Pacific Life Insurance Co. of Newport Beach, Calif., have announced that Alta at K Station in downtown Chicago has been awarded Gold LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The two-tower complex of 848 luxury residences is the largest apartment building in the country to have earned Gold LEED honors.

Located at 555 W. Kinzie St., Alta at K Station earned this prestigious designation through a number of green construction practices, including recycling building materials; reducing its energy consumption; creating a green roof and landscaping that requires minimal water; maximizing the natural light and views in each unit; and meeting an advanced standard for the indoor air quality.

“As Chicago is one of the greenest cities in the country, it’s fitting that we chose our hometown to develop the largest Gold LEED apartment complex,” said Steven Fifield, president and founder of Fifield Companies. “We wanted to challenge ourselves to show the public that a luxury apartment building can also be eco-friendly, especially on such a large scale as Alta at K Station. The apartments are on par with some of the finest condominiums in Chicago and the amenities rival those of an upscale hotel.”

Residences at Alta at K Station have floor-to-ceiling windows; kitchens with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances; ceramic tile baths with oversized vanities; in-home laundry areas with washer and dryer; and individually controlled heating and air conditioning. Studio, one- and two-bedroom floor plans with one to two baths are available in each tower. Floor plans range from 508 to 1,807 square feet with rents starting at $1,455 per month. The apartment complex’s West Tower, which opened in March 2010, is already more than 70 percent leased, while its East Tower, which opened in June 2010 is more than 50 percent leased.

“Based on the positive response we’ve had to Alta, we’re pledging that every apartment building we develop going forward will be LEED certified,” said Fifield. “They may not all be Gold LEED like Alta at K Station, but the benefits of a green building are too numerous to ignore – from both a business perspective and the environment.

“It’s very rewarding to know we’ve built an apartment building that residents feel good about because of its smaller carbon footprint as well as its fun factor,” Fifield added.

Residents of Alta at K Station have access to a host of on-site amenities, such as a 32,000 square foot amenities deck called K2 club that includes a full-court indoor sports court for basketball, volleyball, tennis and various exercise classes. K2 also offers a resident lounge; party suite and private balcony equipped with outdoor seating and a grill; business center; 23-seat stadium-style theater; men’s and women’s locker rooms, each with a sauna; and two state-of-the-art workout areas featuring Technogym equipment with iPod compatibility.

For entertainment, residents can check out Wii, Xbox or PlayStation equipment from the K2 concierge, offered through property manager Lincoln Property Company. K2 also features an outdoor sun terrace with an Olympic-sized pool, outdoor spa, private cabanas, gourmet grill kitchen and a gas fire pit.

Additionally, Alta offers 24-hour maintenance and door staff and an on-site valet dry cleaner.

Residents of Alta at K Station can enjoy numerous outdoor conveniences, such as the adjacent 1-acre THEpark at K Station, which has terraced green space, walking paths, a large playground, seating areas and a fenced-in dog run. The complex is also within walking distance of the Loop, a new Jewel-Osco, Ogilvie Transportation Center, Union Station, several L stations, restaurants, nightlife, galleries and shopping.

Eight model units are available to tour.
