Hotel That Made Neighbors Red Gets Green Light From City

The controversial hotel that New York developer Tishman Realty wants to shoehorn into Streeterville has been given its first permits from the City of Chicago.

FOUNDATION ONLY FOR A PROPOSED 18 STORY 336 KEY HOTEL TO INCLUDE BASEMENT AND GROUND FLOOR SLAB AS PER PLANS.

The new limited service Aloft Chicago Mag Mile, designed by Valerio Dewalt Train, replaces the old Museum of Contemporary Art building at 237 East Ontario Street.  The paperwork bears the address 243 East Ontario.  It remains to be seen what the final number will be.

This hotel was originally proposed to rise 24 stories in one of the most densely packed areas of the city.  The height was cut back to 19 stories in order to fit inside the existing DX-12 zoning for that parcel.  That allowed the developer to bypass certain cumbersome city paperwork requirements and a certain amount of public input.  It also opened up a path for an end run around the neighborhood’s notorious NIMBY’s, some of whom are so bloody-mindedly against this project that their e-mails read like a dog trying to take a drink out of a sprinkler.

More lucid neighbors are against the hotel because of traffic concerns, which seems perfectly legitimate considering how often traffic comes to a standstill on this block, either because of ambulances, or Michigan Avenue pedestrians clogging the street a block and a half away.

The hotel is expected to open around the end of 2018.
