Time Lapse: Deconstructing Prentice

As we count down the days until Bertrand Goldberg’s former Prentice Women’s Hospital becomes just a memory, we received a very fortunate phone call. Dr. Robert L Vogelzang, of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, has been taking pictures of the Prentice demolition from his office window since it started.  With the end near, he used our Tip Line to get in touch, and sent along a couple of dozen...

Deconstructing Chicago: Prentice Becomes a Platform

Over the last year, we’ve shown you lots of pictures of the former Prentice Women’s Hospital being demolished by work crews.  To date, those pictures have always been from the ground.  But here’s another perspective on it.  From above, the Prentice demolition leaves a clover-shaped platform open in the middle of Streeterville.  So if you have a lunar lander that doesn’t fit in your building’s parking...

Status Update: The Borging of Prentice

If you’ll excuse the sci-fi reference, it looks like the former Prentice Womens’ Hospital (320 East Huron Street) is being assimilated by the Borg. Ranks of scaffolding now envelop the lower pavilion of the Bertrand Goldberg-designed tower that was the first thing hundreds of thousands of glistening new Chicagoans saw over the decades. Deconstruction crews are removing the exterior walls so they can drive demolition...

Status Update: Demolition of Prentice Womens’ Hospital

Demolition of the former Prentice Womens’ Hospital (320 East Huron Street) is underway.  Crews have removed the skywalk connecting the bulbous Bertrand Goldberg-designed building to Northwestern’s Lurie Medical Research Center next door at 303 East Superior Street. The removal left a portion of Prentice’s west side bashed in.  It’s also been marked up with spray paint to guide demolition teams as they continue...

Demolition Permit Issued for Chicago’s Beloved Former Prentice Womens’ Hospital

It’s been a long road for preservationists, and that road looks like it’s finally coming to an end. A dead end.
