Taking Stock of Stockton

Stockton Elementary School

Stockton Elementary School

With the Bud Billiken Parade now safely behind us, school bells will be ringing at many Chicago Public Schools soon.

When the kiddies return to Stockton Elementary (4420 North Beacon Street), they probably won’t notice, but much of the exterior of the school has been restored.  In this photo, you can see part of the parapet has been removed.  Much more extensive work is being done on other sides of the building.  Fortunately, the mosaics that give the school’s arches some much-needed color remain intact.

Strangely, the construction project is not listed in the Chicago Public Building Commission’s list of current school construction.  It only shows the 1993 renovation.
