Our Gold Coast spy e-mailed a couple of photos to us today. They show Ann Taylor’s Michigan Avenue store at the corner of Michigan and Ontario (600 North Michigan Avenue) is now closed. The store is moving down the block to a smaller space, but at the same time it’s supposed to be upgrading its facilities.
The new Ann Taylor store is supposed to be an experimental concept store where new ideas can be tried out and then farmed out to the other stores if they, as the ad men say, “play in Peoria,” with Chicago standing in for its bucolic neighbor.
You won’t have to wait long to find out what Ann has in mind. We’re told that inside, the racks are filled and the shelves are already stocked. The new store opens this Saturday, March 3rd, 2012.
Now the question is — what will take the prominent corner space at 600 North Michigan Avenue? It’s probably too small a space for the unified Saks Fifth Avenue store people have been speculating about, but it might just be enough for Uniqlo, which has also been prowling the area.
UPDATE: March 1, 2012:
An article in Crain’s jogged my memory — An AT&T flagship store is going in to the old Ann Taylor space. I read it on my phone, so I don’t have a link available. Sorry, Crain’s!
