From the “Gee, that was fast” file — The Mariano’s supermarket in Greektown is now open at 40 South Halsted.
It’s the second grocery store to open in the area in the last year, putting additional pressure on the decrepit Dominick’s grocery store that the neighborhood had been living with for a long, long time.
Mariano’s is part of The Gateway development, which is supposed to eventually include a residential tower with more than 200 apartments. However, people attending the recent public meeting about the new Greektown skyscraper at 765 West Adams expressed some skepticism that it would actually be built. The web site of architecture firm Antunovich Associates has the retail project, but no pictures or mention of the retail tower. We’ll see what happens.
