A few years ago, Walgreens started rolling out a fleet of new “flagship” stores. Not surprisingly one of them landed in The Loop. The second one is going to open in Bucktown next month.
It’s being built inside the landmark Noel State Bank Building (1601 North Milwaukee Avenue) on the corner of North Damen and North Milwaukee Avenues.
A reader sent in some construction pictures showing the inside of the building about a year ago, so updating this project is long overdue.
Walgreens says it is taking great pains to respect the architectural integrity of the former bank building. One of its gimmicks is to re-use the old bank vault as a new “Vitamin Vault.” It will be interesting to see if people can go inside the vault to do their shopping like they can with the old bank building in downtown Highwood that is now the Antiques Shop of Highland Park (51 Highwood Avenue, Highwood).
Like Chicago’s other flagship Walgreen’s, it will have a number of non-standard features like a juice bar, an eyebrow bar, and a wine bar with 700 wines from which to choose.
