The new retail space at McClurg Court Center (600 North McClurg Court) is really starting to take shape.

The ground floor spaces of the two towers are being gutted and are being replaced with some snazzy-looking retail space.

Five new small stores are being created along Ontario Street, joining the two existing stores there. Seven new stores are going in along Ohio Street, and one massive new store space is being carved out at the corner of Ohio and Fairbanks. The stores will range from 835 to over 15,700 square feet.

This is the latest big residential building to turn its inward-facing retail space into outward-facing, pedestrian-friendly space, as building owners realize that the rat’s maze concepts of the 1960’s and 70’s just don’t work.

Other residential towers diving heavily into retail include Presidential Towers (555 West Madison Street), and Millennium Park Plaza (151 North Michigan Avenue).

The McClurg renovation was supposed to be completed by Fall of last year, but looks on track to be complete in the next couple of months.
