Demolition of Prentice Womens’ Hospital

Demolition of the former Prentice Womens' Hospital

Demolition of the former Prentice Womens’ Hospital (320 East Huron Street) is underway.  Crews have removed the skywalk connecting the bulbous Bertrand Goldberg-designed building to Northwestern’s Lurie Medical Research Center next door at 303 East Superior Street.

The removal left a portion of Prentice’s west side bashed in.  It’s also been marked up with spray paint to guide demolition teams as they continue turning this tower into a vacant lot.

When we visited, the air was filled with the sounds of shattering glass.  One of the workers apparently had the task of bashing in all of the windows one by one.  A destructive childhood dream come true, perhaps; but sad to see happening to this once noble building.
