Construction Update
The Tiny Alley That Will Soon Be A Hilton Garden Inn

Hilton Garden Inn under construction

Move over GEMS Academy, there’s a new contender for the title of “Chicago’s most cramped construction site.”

GDS Companies has begun work on a new Hilton Garden Inn below street level at 66 East Wacker Place. The 26-story limited service hotel designed by GREC Architects is being squeezed into the tiny space between the Seventeenth Church of Christ and the Chicago Motor Club building.  It will be the third hotel on the one-block-long street.

Three pieces of heavy equipment have jammed themselves into the end of the narrow alley behind the Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront (formerly Hotel 71).  Two look like caisson drilling rigs and the third is some kind of bulldozer. It’s a tight fit for such burly machinery.

The developers hope to have the hotel open by spring of 2015.
