After being delayed by administrative things behind-the-scenes, construction has started on the very controversial Antunovich Associates-designed British School of Chicago’s South Loop campus. The project is an extension of The Roosevelt Collection, the residential, retail, and entertainment complex that’s gaining momentum at 150 West Roosevelt Road.
It was just two weeks ago that friends-of-the-blog, Sloopin‘, noted that the property had been fenced off. Now demolition crews are busy jackjhammering at the fringes of the Roosevelt Collection, and shoving muddy earth around to make room for several hundred new private school students.
A very vocal group of South Loop residents lost their cooling when they saw the proposal last year. They contend that the planned public greenspace on top of the school isn’t the same thing as the public park they were promised by the developer. Now that construction has begun, that debate has become… academic.
