Two weeks after good readers like you started sending in pictures of demolition equipment massing near the bowels of the Magnificent Mile, and two days after we reported that they were swarming to attack the former Lakeshore Athletic Club at 441 North Wabash Avenue, a pair of powerful pneumatic pincers on poles are prying apart the property.
It was Loop Spy Ryan who first sent us pictures of the demolition equipment, followed by further tips from other readers including Streeterville Spy Brian. Yesterday River North Spy Jon was walking past the intersection of Illinois and Rush Streets and caught the very beginning of the structure shredding, and send in these pictures of the mechanical mayhem.
Aside from the fascination of watching the mostly metal building being torn, snipped, and ripped to pieces, people want to know what’s going happen next? The building was in sound condition, so it wouldn’t get torn down unless there was a reason to, right? Right?
We shall see. The last plans we heard of for this location were for a Trump-rivaling skyscraper that could be a combination of offices and a hotel.
But the owners of the land, the Realtor folks, are playing this one close to the vest.
Update — August 22, 2014 @ 3:30pm:
We heard from National Association of Realtors® C.E.O. Dale Stinton. He wants everyone to know in no uncertain terms that what’s going on at the Lakeshore Athletic Club block has nothing to do with the National Association of Realtors®. National Association of Realtors® spokeswoman Stephanie Singer tells us that the National Association of Realtors® decided in April, 2014 not to leave the National Association of Realtors® building at 430 North Michigan Avenue.
