A Coat of Paint, or the Start of a New Skyscraper?

Loop Spy Otto (Really?  “Otto?”) sent in these photographs of the parking garage at 200 West Randolph Street getting a new paint job.  Why is that so interesting?  Because the wall being panted is planned to be the common wall joining John Buck Company’s new 151 North Franklin.

200 West RandolphThe city of Chicago approved construction of the 36-story office building designed by John Ronan in April of this year.  Since then, the Walgreens store on the site has been shuttered, and the only activity is a couple of random parkers.

Speculation from Otto (Really?)  is that the parking garage is being sprayed with some kind of water-proofing agent that precedes construction of the new office block.

We shall see.

  1. too bad they aren’t proceeding with the previous plan to replace the parking structure w/another tower as well … that can still happen, but will just take more time. it’s good to see the old decrepit parking structures being slowly replaced by towers downtown (a good sign of our changing culture not being so automobile dependent once again).

      Actually, I don’t think it can still happen. If I recall correctly, 151 North Franklin is using air rights from the parking lot to get some of its height.
