GREC is an acronym that keeps popping up on Chicago projects more and more often these days — from the Hilton Garden Inn going up on East Wacker Place to the upcoming Randolph Plaza to Bacardi at the Park down on 35th Street.

GREC recently moved into new offices at 645 North Michigan Avenue, and sent over some pictures of the new place, along with a press release you can read below.

GREC Architects (, a multi-disciplinary design firm based in Chicago, today announced the opening of its new headquarters at 645 Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. The Chicago office will continue to be the firm’s primary base of operations.

The newly completed office has an open plan configuration with a studio space overlooking North Michigan Avenue. The space benefits from state of the art meeting facilities, teaming spaces, material sample areas and flexible social spaces. The designers incorporated a random display of LED light fixtures above the 17-foot high architectural studio that is intended to be a visual contribution to the experience of Michigan Avenue from the street level. The design of the new office, located in a 1960’s era office building designed by Naess and Murphy, exposes much of the building’s concrete structure while introducing complimentary materials such as glass, mill-finished steel and terrazzo.

Greg Randall, one of the firm’s three managing principals, remarks, “The relocation gave us the opportunity to increase the capacity of our office at a time when our business is expanding. It also allowed us to utilize our collaborative design process to create a space that demonstrates our approach to design. Many members of our staff had input into the design and execution of the new office environment and we are all benefiting from the process.”

GREC Architects is a Chicago-based firm of over 20 architects whose work includes resort and hospitality; civic; commercial and mid- to high-rise residential developments. The firm, established in 1989, has completed numerous and diverse types of projects, focusing on design solutions that directly meet the needs of the client and are both ecologically sustainable and financially viable. In Chicago, the firm’s current projects include the 500-unit, 68-story high- rise in Streeterville in collaboration with Robert A. M. Stern’s office for Related Midwest and a 240-unit apartment building at 625 West Division Street for Portland-based developer Gerding Edlen, and the design of the Ace Hotel for Sterling Bay in the Fulton Market District of Chicago.

GREC Architects is the architect for the 27-story Hilton Garden Inn that is under construction at 66 E. Wacker Place and the recently completed, award-winning 183-key Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. They are also the Design Architect and Lead Consultant for the Abu Dhabi Golf Club Resort Hotel, a 148-room Westin Resort in Abu Dhabi.
