Construction Update
How Did That Garden Inn Grow

Hilton Garden Inn under constructionIt’ll be a few months before the tulips start poking their heads up along Michigan Avenue again, but one off-Michigan garden has already fully sprouted.

The new Hilton Garden Inn at 66 East Wacker Place has topped out and developer GDS Companies out of Evanston is looking forward to the building going into full  bloom in the next few months.  As you can see in these photos from Loop Spy Daniel, the 26-story building designed by GREC Architects has topped out and work is continuing on its facade.

The west side, currently covered with big yellow rectangles, will eventually be covered with a grid of horizontal metal panels in five shades of gray.  The panels will be dithered in a manner to suggest the reflection of light off the water of the Chicago River.  It’s not ideal, but it’s what can be done since Chicago fire codes prevented the building from having windows on the west side.
