With all the hubbub and hullabaloo surrounding next week’s public meeting about the Wanda Tower (381 East Wacker Drive), and with the GEMS Academy’s second classroom building officially underway next door, we thought we’d remind you that there’s another major project ready to bud this spring along the carefully manicured grounds of Lakeshore East: Building O.
The Chicago Architecture Blog’s Daniel Schell skedaddled over to Lakeshore East recently to check out the space that will, banks willing, soon hold an structural triple-threat— an apartment block atop two different hotels “side by each,” as they say in Wisconsin. What he found was rather disappointing. The same damp strip of ground that we saw last fall before the snow started to fly.
The interesting tower was designed by friends-of-the-blog, bKL Architecture.
There was some indication in the Chicago Sun-Times a few months ago that there might be financing difficulties with the project. But that doesn’t mean that the clever thinkers Magellan Development can’t figure out a way to switch from an EB-5 scheme to traditional bank financing to get this built. Considering that tower cranes have come back to roost in downtown Chicago like the Swallows to Capistrano, we’ll keep an eye on this mud and let you know when something changes.
