The Please-Don’t-Call-It-DePaul-Arena

Prairie and Cermak construction

Demolition work is just about complete at 2130 South Prairie Avenue, where the new DePaul Arena McCormick Place Events Center will soon be built.

The Chicago Architecture Blog’s Daniel Schell darted by the future Demon Dome recently as crews were taking the last few bites out of an existing unloved one-story building.  You’ll remember it was just six months ago that clearing space for this multi-purpose facility got started in dramatic fashion when the Rees House was hefted onto a brazillion tiny tires and rolled to a new address up the street.

Construction of this building will be less interesting than originally expected because the original plan approved by the community to sink the arena into an underground bowl was scrapped because of cost concerns.  Now it will look like pretty much every other arena from Fresno to Fargo.  It also loses ground-floor restaurant and retail space which was supposed to  help lure conventioneers out of the McCormick cocoon and into the neighborhood.
