Loop Skyscraper Gets a Model’s Name

They’re both modestly tall.

They both have shiny skin.

And now they’re both named “Mila.”

The skyscraper erection at 200 North Michigan Avenue is now officially named “Mila,” just like model-turned-actress Mila Kunis.  But while the star of the Chicago-filmed Jupiter Ascending was born in southern Ukraine in the Soviet Bloc, the  skyscraper she now shares her name with was born just up the block at the bKL Architecture studios in Lakeshore East.

“It’s truly a humbling moment for me,” Ms. Kunis did not say. “Filming Jupiter Ascending on location made me a total Chicago skyscraper nerd, and I’m a huge fan of bKL.  To have one of their buildings named after me is the best honor I could imagine,” she didn’t continue.

The Chicago “Mila” is a contraction of “Michigan” and “Lake” — the intersection where the building is located.  The other “Mila” is a traditional Ukrainian name meaning, “Oh my God, not borscht again tonight! Why can’t we move to Hollywood and eat In-and-Out Burger like human beings?”

Right now the building at 200 North Michigan is just a steel skeleton.  Ms. Kunis could probably use a sammitch, too.

Other ways the two are similar:

  • They both have Twitter accounts on their behalf, though neither of them tweet
  • The building has “Class A” apartments, and Ms. Kunis is said to be “A Classy” dame
  • The building has been awarded LEED Silver status, and Ms. Kunis was awarded a shiny silver statue in the MTV Movie Awards
  • The skyscraper is being built by Pepper Construction, while Ms. Kunis has been known to demolish jalapeño peppers at lunch

The PR firm for the developers of 200 North Michigan sent us a press release announcing the building’s change of name to “Mila.”  You can read it after the handy infographic below.   Ms. Kunis’ PR firm didn’t send us anything.

Mila the building is on the left, and Mila the actress* is on the right. Try not to confuse them.

MICHIGAN AVENUE LUXURY APARTMENTS TO BE NAMED MILA

Opening Spring 2016, Skyscraper at Michigan and Lake to Extend Chicago’s Magnificent Mile

Chicago, IL – (May 15, 2015) – North Michigan Avenue’s first skyscraper in over five years will be called MILA. Named for its premier location on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lake Street, the 41-story luxury residential development is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2016, bridging Chicago’s legendary Magnificent Mile with Millennium Park. MILA is developed as a joint venture between Partners Group, Becker Ventures, and The John Buck Company.

MILA, which broke ground in October 2014 at 200 North Michigan Ave, was designed by bKL Architecture and will feature 402 Class-A luxury residences. Rising 488 feet and highlighted by floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the building’s clean, highly polished modern façade offers a luxury residential experience previously unseen on this section of Michigan Avenue. In addition to contemporary units with high-end finishes, residents will enjoy such premium amenities as a roof-top pool and lounge, dog-park and pet grooming stations, and fully equipped media and gaming rooms. The project is focused on sustainability and is anticipated to be LEED certified.

Occupying 160 feet of Michigan Avenue frontage, and 130 feet on Lake Street, MILA’s first two floors will feature more than 21,000 square feet of prime retail space that range from 1,200 to 8,500 square feet.

“We’re very proud to be delivering an elegant building in such a vital breadth of downtown Chicago,” said Rich DeLeo, Senior Vice President at The John Buck Company. “As important as this stretch of Michigan Avenue is, we knew adding a building as stunning as MILA would do justice for this part of Chicago.”

Pam Alsterlind, Partner and Co-Head Private Real Estate, Partners Group, added: ”MILA will stand out not only for the quality of its design, which is a perfect complement to its downtown location, but also for the standard it sets for luxury residential builds in Chicago. Partners Group is proud and excited to be involved in this development.”

“Becker Ventures is thrilled to be part of MILA in its luxurious location where Michigan Avenue meets Millennium Park,” said Carrie Meghie, Co-President of Becker Ventures. “We have been looking forward to redeveloping 200 N. Michigan since acquiring the asset in 2006 and are excited for its distinctive stamp on the city next Spring.”
