A familiar Gold Coast corner is getting a makeover. If you subscribe to our Facebook or Twitter feeds (hint, hint) then you were among the first to know that the Chicago Plan Commission has approved the demolition and reconstruction of the building at 1121 North State Street. Downtown dwellers know it as the Big Bowl and Corner Bakery Building.
Under the guidance of Baum Realty Group, the property will go from a single story to a whopping one story tall, which explains why Chicago Architecture Blog reporter Daniel Schell tells us that the measure passed with no comments from commissioners, or the public. Its height will increase by a modest six feet.
We only make note of it here because Mr. Schell bothered to go to City Hall to get this information, and because it’s a pretty well-known location in downtown Chicago, and we are a downtown-focused blog.
