Niche 905 Breaks Ground at 905 North Orleans

Niche 905 Breaks ground

Groundbreaking ceremonies at Niche 905, being constructed at 905 North Orleans Street.

The sun cooperated. The wind, not so much. But the cold breeze wasn’t stopping Ascend Real Estate Group from breaking ground on Niche 905, the new FitzGerald Associates-designed 18-story luxury rental tower they’re erecting in a joint effort with Boston’s Intercontinental Real Estate Corp.

Bill Wolk, president of Ascend, opened the festivities by thanking everyone involved in the 2-year process of getting Niche 905 from concept to dirt throwing. But it was what he did next that turned this windy assembly into a truly special event: he handed a check for $50,000 over to¬†Bishop James C. Austin Sr. of the St. Luke Church of God in Christ, which is located directly across the street at 914 North Orleans, for the church’s building fund. (It is on St. Luke’s former parking lot that Niche 905 will be built.)

Bishop Austin graciously accepted the check on behalf of his church, which has been serving the neighborhood for 73 years. He thanked Mr. Wolk, and Ascend, while advising all in attendance he has been praying, and will continue to pray, for the project, and especially those working on the site, that they’ll remain safe. With construction accidents making news often in Chicago lately, it was an especially touching moment.

Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. (27th ward) was next to speak, praising the development teams for including not only St. Luke, but the entire neighborhood, in their plans, and he too was especially thankful for the generous donation to what he acknowledges to be a very important congregation in his ward.
