The new hotel being slotted into the narrow space at 228 East Ontario Street has been under construction for some time, with crews working on the foundation, shoring up the basement level with long pipes and lots of wood.  Now word comes that the tower crane for this project will be erected in the first week of the new year.

January 4, 2016 is the date that the base is due to arrive on-site and to be put in place.  The rest of it will show up the following weekend, January 8 (Friday) through 11 (Monday), which means that block of Ontario will be closed.

The hotel in question is being developed by SMASHotels and was designed by Koo and Associates.  As mentioned earlier, this is a small space.  60 feet wide, 120 feet deep.  Eventually, it’s going to rise 22 stories with 200 rooms, according to Koo’s web site, which also lists this as being part of the Marriott Autograph collection of quasi-independent hotels.  The Hotel Chicago (formerly Hotel Sax, formerly House of Blues Hotel), is also an Autograph property.
