Shoptalk: Perkins+Will Named Chicago Firm of the Year

We don’t do a lot of awards news here.  Mostly because there are thousands of architecture awards handed out each year, sometimes for minutiae, by organizations big and miniscule.  But the Chicago chapter of the AIA is a big deal, and so is its Firm of the Year award, which this year went to Perkins+Will.  This is the firm’s 80th year for its flagship office here in the Windy City.  Read more about it in the press release below this gallery of recent Chicago work by P+W:

The Chicago Office of Perkins+Will Named 2015 Firm of Year by AIA Chicago
Flagship office of firm recognized for breadth, quality of work

CHICAGO — The Chicago office of global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will has been selected 2015 Firm of the Year by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Chicago chapter. The award recognizes the excellence of the firm’s body of work over the years and continued contribution to the architectural profession. With the 2015 award, Perkins+Will is the only repeat winner since the award was established in 1991.

“We selected Perkins+Will because of the breadth, depth, and quality of their project submissions,” AIA Chicago jurors said. “There is a clarity in how they’re working. We are impressed with the firm’s culture – it is a great training ground.”

The Firm of the Year Award caps a signature year for the flagship and largest office of Perkins+Will. As the firm celebrates its 80th anniversary, the award underscores the firm’s history of design leadership. “The Firm of the Year Award is both exciting and humbling,” said Gina Berndt, managing director of the Chicago office. “It is recognition for our entire office and the impact everyone has made on the way people study, work, and live in Chicago and in communities around the world.”

The honor comes just after Perkins+Will received five Design Excellence Awards – more than any other Chicago firm – from AIA Chicago at its annual Designight, recognizing national and international work from the firm’s higher education, interior design, branded environments, corporate and commercial, and civic and cultural practice areas. Two of those Chicago projects – William Jones College Preparatory High School and Contemporaine, the residential, retail and parking building – were cited by jurors in the Firm of the Year Award. “Their projects are elegantly planned and grounded on specific sites, not just playing with the vernacular of the field,” said AIA Chicago jurors. Perkins+Will also received the 2015 Mies van der Rohe Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Illinois for Jones College Prep.

The year also marked the beginning of a new generation of Perkins+Will buildings in the Chicago area. Northwestern University broke ground in May on the Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in downtown Chicago, and in November on the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Fieldhouse and the Mark and Kimbra Walter Athletics Center on the Evanston campus.
