Another step is being taken toward State Street returning to its status as “that great street” as construction and demolition crews set their sights on 100, 112, and 114 South State Street.
As you can see in the video above, Mid-America Real Estate is marketing the northern two properties for retail development. Until recently, 100 North State was the offices of Amalgamated Bank. 112 is still the location of a Men’s Wearhouse store, the official store of men caught short while attending weddings at the Palmer House across the street. And 114 is the multi-level Ulta cosmetics store that makes very interesting use of negative space inside.
On a related note, it’s worth watching the video even if you’re not in the market for a 50,000 square foot retail building. Because someone, somewhere, working at or for Mid-America has digitally re-created the State Street corridor in almost convincing detail. As the kids say these days, it is snatched A.F.
Even though 114 isn’t part of the deal, it’s the building of immediate concern. That’s because the city has issued a construction permit for shoring things up in preparation for the demolition of 112. In permit parlance:

Once 112 is removed, it will be re-built as a more unified addition to the also-to-be-renovated 100 North State. There has been much speculation in the real estate community that 100-112 will be flogged as a single retail unit because it would be the last big flagship opportunity in the State Street Corridor. But, if the video above is to be believed, those Monday morning quarterbacks are off base, as the video clearly shows the building hacked up into several retail spaces each with its own branding.
Long story short (too late): Big State Street retail project ahead. First little steps about to start.
