Hot Potato to be Dropped in West Town

1132 West Randolph

A gentle snow falls at 1132 West Randolph Street. That building will be next.

Add another building to the list of the doomed in West Town, as Restaurant Row continues its expansion westward.

Hot Potato, the modest two-story brick edifice occupying both 1132 and 1136 West Randolph Street, has been issued demolition permits by the City of Chicago. Unlike many projects happening in this neighborhood, there won’t be any facades saved on this one (see Ace Hotel and Brooklyn Bowl). Nope, you can unwrap the foil and add the sour cream and chives, because this Hot Potato is thoroughly cooked.

854 West Randolph

The empty lot at 854 West Randolph and Green Street, Nobu’s chosen location.

Almost two years ago, Crain’s Chicago reported that this building would become a parking lot forĀ a multi-story, 83-key hotel and 10,000-square-foot restaurant space from Nobu Hospitality Group. That proposal, which will go a couple blocks east at 854 West Randolph, was approved by the Chicago Plan Commission back in July of 2015. Whether or not the Hot Potato lot is still targeted as Nobu’s parking is unconfirmed at this point.

Either way, look for Taylor Excavating, your demo experts of record, to start mashing Hot Potato in the very near future. We’ll keep an ear to the ground for you on plans for this site moving forward.
