City Allows Gold Coast’s Sinclair to Inch Skyward

The residential skyscraper and supermarket formerly colloquially known as the Tower of Jewel has been granted permission to put on some height.

Permits were just issued allowing construction crews to proceed on the SCB-designed skyscraper up to the third floor of the residential tower, and up to the second floor of the parking garage.  That leaves the building just 32 stories to go.

The Sinclair had its ceremonial groundbreaking a little over two months ago.  When completed, it will have 300 residences in 35 stories, plus a new Jewel-Osco grocery store to replace the one that once stood at the corner of LaSalle and Division.

The project also includes the rehabilitation of the Mark Twain Hotel building at 111 West Division Street.  In January the developer filed paperwork with the zoning board to allow it to build 151 hotel rooms in the building, plus ground floor retail.    When we asked the developer’s PR company for more information, we were told that the developer didn’t want to talk.  The hotel was later pushed back until the zoning meeting on March 18th.
