It’s been a little over two years since we broke the news that a new residential tower would rise at 1000 South Clark Street. Back then we got a lot of blow-back from angry NIMNYs who said it wouldn’t happen. Tell that to the people who started moving in to the Hartshorne Plunkard-designed building this past February.
Yesterday we got a note from Lendlease (It’s one word now, apparently) that the building is about to receive its Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Chicago. That’s one of the final steps in buttoning up the development process.
Located in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood, 1000 South Clark is a 567,000 gross square foot, 29-story residential tower comprised of 469 apartment units and 88,000 square feet of parking space for 329 vehicles.
1000 South Clark was one of the first buildings to go up along what’s becoming a skyscraper corridor lining the Metra railroad tracks stretching south from LaSalle Street Station. The result is a high enough population density to encourage other developers to replace surface parking lots with big box stores, high end restaurants, and shopping malls of various sizes.
