The intersection of Clark and Huron in River North is about to get its third hotel.
The Chicago Plan Commission has approved plans for a 17-story hotel at 100 West Huron Street. That’s across the street from both the Hotel Felix, and the Godfrey Hotel.
Felix was the pioneer in boutique hotels in this corner of the city. Oxford Capital converted the SRO known as the Hotel Wacker into the Felix back in 2009. Since then, demand for hotel rooms in downtown Chicago has continued to increase, leading a flock of other developers to put together their own hotel projects, both large and small.
This latest project is one of the few in play that doesn’t have the Oxford name attached to it. This is an Akara Partners development, that will be 180 feet tall with 200 rooms. It also includes 5,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.
What it doesn’t include is parking. Downtown Chicago developers, both hotel and residential, are shying away from building parking when they can. Part of it is a change in the way Americans live in the 21st century, where having a car isn’t a high priority. Increased density downtown also makes a car less necessary. And Chicago’s urban core is starting to reach New York levels of expense and inconvenience when it comes to four-wheeled transport. Hotel developers often cite a statistic that states just 17% of people who stay in downtown Chicago bring a car with them.
If you’re concerned about the Underground Wonder Bar next door, don’t worry. You can still get you fill of funk until 4am. That building isn’t part of this project.
