There’s been a great deal of talk in the Grand Rapids area about a proposal to put up a new tallest building in the city’s downtown. Now we’re finally getting to see it.
The building is called 10 Ionia, and is conveniently located at 10 Ionia Avenue Northwest. When completed, the $90 million tower will stand 420 feet tall, with 40 floors containing 140 hotel rooms and 255 apartments. The current tallest building in Grand Rapids is River House at 406 feet, followed by Plaza Towers at 345 feet. Building heights in the city rapidly taper downward from there.
According to the MLive news site, the city’s Historic Preservation Commission approved the building proposed by The Hinman Company last month, but still recently held a meeting to review the plans so it could get a better idea of what the building will look like. That’s how the renderings have finally become public.
Right now the property is a surface parking lot. Before that it was an 11-story 1920’s-era parking garage.
