Kimpton’s latest boutique hotel in downtown Chicago is now open. The Gray debuted in the former New York Life Building which was known as 39 South LaSalle Street, but now is using the address 122 West Monroe Street.
This is Kimpton’s fifth hotel in downtown Chicago. Its other hits include stalwarts The Burnham, Hotel Monaco, and Hotel Allegro; along with newcomer Hotel Palomar north of the river. The Grey is the latest place to lay one’s head in the city’s financial district, which until a few years ago was almost devoid of lodging options.
To honor that position on LaSalle Street, the hotel was opened by staff and dignitaries in jackets reminiscent of those the city’s commodities brokers wear, and climaxed with the ringing of a market opening bell.
The hotel’s common areas keep to the building’s last-century insurance company pedigree, with overstuffed leather chairs, and bookshelves functioning as partitions. But the Kimpton aesthetic is still there, so quirks you’ve gotten used to from the San Francisco chain’s other hotels, like loaner fixies, haven’t been left out.
Until you get a chance to stay there yourself, enjoy the photos below, sent over by Kimpton Hotels. But don’t count on rooftop tango dancers when you arrive.
