It’s supposed to be a lovely day on Friday. So skip work. Bring a couple of beach chairs, a bucket of Rolling Rocks and your favorite son or daughter up to the corner of Fullerton and Lincoln so the two of you can relax and watch the mayhem.
The mayhem in question is the demolition of the former Children’s Memorial Hospital which has reached its meatiest stage. The excavators are ripping into the building like wolves fighting over a slow buffalo. Pictures sent in by Doctor Robert Vogelzang show the destruction at its best. The sort of thing that makes kids beg for Tonka trucks for Christmas. Or maybe these days it’s a Tonka app.
In its place will be a new micro-neighborhood by Hines and McCaffery Interests, made up of a pair of 19-story residential towers, five dozen townhomes, and enough retail space to make a brand new shopping cart’s left front wheel uncooperative. Design credit goes to New York’s Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and River North’s Antunovich Associates.
