No Loafing For Construction Crews At Former Bakery Site

That’s not the smell of fresh baked bread hanging in the air over 1001 West Chicago Avenue these days. That’s a tower crane. And it doesn’t smell at all like bread. Yo Chicago’s Joe Zekas slid a copy of his recent photograph of construction progress at the site into our tip line toaster, and what popped up is both crispy and delicious.

It shows the former industrial bakery has been scraped from the earth, and construction crews are busy turning it into a pair of offset residential mid-rises linked by a podium designed by friends-of-the-blog FitzGerald Associates. When it’s done, we’re talking 363 new apartments, some with views of the Chicago skyline that your local teen-ager would describe as “ossim.”
