Word on the intarwebs (via Sloopin’) is that there’s a lot of dozing going on along South Clark Street these days. And we don’t mean the sleepytime kind.
Several neighbors have spotted heavy machinery making mincemeat of the trees, bushes, and squatters’ quarters scattered across the immense and vacant scrubland between Roosevelt Road and 15th Street-ish. That’s where seven months ago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel promised that Related Midwest and General Mediterranean Holdings were about to build a 62-acre mixed use community with offices, retail, and many thousands of new homes.
In addition, we’ve been telling you for years that CDOT is interested in restoring the link between Chinatown and downtown, which means extending Wells Street southward from the Roosevelt Road Target to the area near Ping Tom Park. Might this be the first steps toward that dream coming true? We’ve got feelers out and will let you know if they touch anything.
Meanwhile, a little upstream, it’s not going to be any quieter. River City is about to start some big riparian construction work. From the permit:
CONSTRUCTION INCLUDES MODIFICATION TO EXISTING MARINA WALL, CONSTRUCTION OF NEW CONCRETE AND SHEET PILE FLOOD WALL ALONG NORTH END OF BUILDING, AND PARKING LOT REVISIONS IN SOUTH PARKING LOT.CURRENT USE OF BUILDING IS MULTIPLE UNIT RESIDENTIAL AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE USED THAT WAY. THERE ARE NO INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS PROPOSED AS PART OF THIS WORK.
If construction of the Related/GMI project to River City’s south, and the CMK/Lend Lease Riverline project happening to its immediate north are serviced by barge the way other recent riverfront projects have, it’s a good idea for River City to make sure it’s ready for all that aquatic traffic.
