Huey Lewis once informed us that it’s hip to be square. And apparently it’s still hip to live inside the geospatial square former by the Chicago Transit Authority’s elevated rail lines that we call The Loop. To wit: Work is about to start on yet another residential building in the heart of said Loop.
The project is at 29 South LaSalle Street. Currently it’s just another 100-year-old office building that once went by the name of Barrister Hall. Soon it will be called “home” by several hundred people as the city has issued a renovation permit allowing a Florida company called Dolce Living Communities Residential to convert the offices into a couple of hundred new residences. The renovation was designed by FitzGerald Associates.
Alterations and addition to existing 13-story office building to convert to residential apartment building including 1 story and mechanical penthouse additions to roof to make a total of 14-story building.The building will include 103 efficiency units and 104 dwelling units for a total of 207 residential units and 5 retail spaces on the ground level. No foundation/micro pile or elevator pit work to be performed under this permit. – no work requiring foundaiton micro/pile or elevator pit is required as a prerequisite under this permit.
Eagle-eyed readers will notice that this is yet another downtown building that is growing vertically. In recent years we’ve seen a number of older buildings add floors as part off their rejuvenation. A few blocks away, the old Atlantic Bank Building at 168 North Michigan Avenue is another good example. Its ongoing renovation is adding four to the formerly 12-story building.
