New FBO Terminal at GYY

Unless you’re in the military; hitch rides on Boeing’s, or Menard’s corporate jets; or can remember the old Chicago Express airline, chances are you’ve never flown out of Gary Chicago International Airport.

Even though it’s been years since there was commercial service from GYY, that doesn’t mean things are stagnant at Chicago’s third (or fourth or fifth, depending how you count) airport.  Tens of millions of dollars have been plowed into the facility over the last decade to improve runways and service buildings.  And in some ways it’s starting to pay off.

The Gary Jet Center has announced that it’s building a new FBO terminal at Gary airport.  The corporate fight center is part of the larger FBO already established by Gary Jet Center, which repairs aircraft.

The new facility was designed by Ghafari Associates, the Michigan architecture firm with projects from Colorado to Muscat.  Interiors are by River North’s Partners by Design.

Press release follows.

GARY, Ind., — Gary Jet Center (GJC) is proud to announce the construction of a new Corporate Flight Center as part of GJC’s Fixed Base Operation at the Gary/Chicago International Airport (KGYY). The project will be a continuation of the highly successful collaboration between the Gary Jet Center and LEE Companies, a Gary, IN based Project Management firm.

“This Corporate Flight Center is the crowning piece in the Gary Jet Center’s goal of providing the finest flight experience in the Chicago aviation market,” reports Wil Davis, Chairman & CEO of the Gary Jet Center.

The new Corporate Flight Center will continue the legacy of premium services that has defined the Gary Jet Center for the last 25 years. The Center, designed by renowned international architecture firm and aviation specialists Ghafari Associates, will be a state-of-the-art addition to GJC’s West Campus and will feature multiple pilots’ lounges, business center, conference room and kitchen facilities.

A luxurious, glass-walled lobby will welcome clients and their guests with soaring views showcasing the newly updated runway. The interiors will be designed by the award-winning Chicago firm, Partners By Design, named Commercial Interior Design Firm of the Year by Crain’s Chicago Business for 5 of the last 10 years.

Partners by Design (PBD) excels at designing warm, contemporary interiors that defy convention to create memorable spaces. Since 1993, PBD has been responsible for many of the most exciting and innovative interiors in Chicago. Inclusion of PBD on the design team signals GJC’s commitment to creating a singular customer experience, and the finest FBO in the Chicagoland area.

“Partners by Design is extremely honored to work with Gary Jet Center and LEE Companies on this exciting project,” said PBD Partner, Tom Rowland. “This facility will be one of the premium FBOs in the country upon completion, which will solidify Gary Jet Center as a pivotal piece for the future of Chicago’s air transportation sector.”

In addition to premium facilities and services, Gary Jet Center leads the way in environmental sustainability at the Gary/Chicago Int’l Airport. GJC Hangar III was the first LEED Certified building in the city of Gary. The new Corporate Flight Center will also be LEED Certified. “It might seem a contradiction to focus on environmentally sustainable projects in the middle of the Rust Belt, but our vision is to help change the image of the region with a commitment to green-building initiatives,” said Patrick Lee, President and Owner of LEE Companies.
