River North, Meet Marlowe, Your New 15-Story Neighbor

Last week we gave you an update on the office building at 676 North LaSalle that’s being converted to apartments, and getting a new addition, doubling its size.  Now its next door neighbor, 675 North Wells Street, has decided it no longer wants to be a surface parking lot and is going to try to make more of itself.

42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly spilled the beans about 675 in a letter to constituents he sent out on Friday.  It indicates that LMC is the driving force behind the project, an apartment tower designed by Antunovich Associates.  In a refreshing break from recent tradition, the building actually has a name before it has a construction permit.  You may call her Marlowe.

Marlowe will stand 15-stories tall on Wells Street between West Erie and West Huron Streets, with 11,000 square feet of retail space around her base.  Though at first glance the exterior isn’t going to win any beauty pageants, care was taken to make use of balconies and other protrusions to at least make it interesting to look at.

NIMBYs and BANANAs who want to whine about the building can go shout into a brick wall.  The building is within existing zoning regulations, which means the developer doesn’t have to do any cartwheels for the public or the city, because it’s not asking for any special treatment.
