Devs Try To Get Union Station Project Back On Track

Remember back in June when plans to redevelop Union Station came out and you were all, “Haven’t we been to this dance before?”  Well, you were right to be skeptical.

Riverside Investment and Development, and Convexity Properties are back with a new redevelopment plan for Union Station.  A move necessitated by 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly, who roundfiled the previous proposal.

In that plan, a seven-story glass box was to squat on top of the historic building.  Together, the building would have ended up with 330 hotel rooms and 404 residences. Traffic concerns, and the ug-mo look of the addition caused the downtown pol to nix that plan.

Mr. Reilly says the new new plan, to be presented to the public next Tuesday, will include 400 hotel rooms.  Crain’s Chicago Business reports the residential portion ended up on the cutting room floor.

The notion of an office tower one block south is still very much alive.

We’ve run out of fingers counting the number of Union Station proposals that have surfaced since we started publishing 15 years ago, so if this next one doesn’t fly, we’re going to have to start wearing sandals.
