The Cooper is the first new residential building going in at Southbank. Four more are coming, as Australia’s Lendlease transforms the former wasteland between Roosevelt Road and River City into a new enclave along the Chicago River. ┬áIt’s like Lakeshore East, but actually on some water.

The Perkins+Will design includes 6,000 square feet of retail space, and two baker’s dozens of two-story townhomes around the base, which is a nice way to make the transition from stark skyscraper to livable neighborhood.

Inside, the 29-story Cooper features 452 apartments in the usual sizes, including three-bedroom options, which continue to increase in popularity.

In addition to the four other towers coming soon, keep an eye out for a public riverwalk, and a seven-acre park that will be the focal point of the community.
