Construction Update
New Streeterville Park a Good Alternative to Crowded Maggie Daley

There’s still more hammers and hard hats than tykes on bikes at Bennett Park in Streeterville, but not for long.

Joe Zekas from YoChicago! floated a new raft of photographs our way showing that the quasi-public space next to the new One Bennett Park skyscraper looks just about done.

New York’s Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates is transforming the mostly boring parking garage cap into something far more than it used to be; with a dog run, jungle gym, lots of plants, and a sandbox big enough to occupy a whole fleet of Tonka trucks until they rust.

Even though most of the pathways are paved with squishy safety foam, a slide, climbing rocks, wood pilings, and other minor hazards provide plenty of opportunities for children to learn important life lessons while parents stretch their yoga pants on the circular zen lawn centerpiece.

It’s an important addition to this under parked neighborhood, which is seeing a dramatic decrease in the average age of its residents.  With this at their doorsteps, there’s little reason for residents to hike over to Maggie Daley Park (also an MVVA joint) for some 21st-century urban escapism.
