Sterling Bay has pulled enough rabbits out of its hat to fill a warren. But Tuesday, it’s going to reach into its homburg again and feel around for a couple of more hares.
That’s when the developer will talk to the public about what it plans to build at Morgan and the Metra tracks, down the street from its West Town headquarters.

Sterling Bay wants to put up an 11-story office building at 345 North Morgan Street, next to the Ace Hotel it built a few years ago. Across the way at 1000 West Carroll Street, it wants to erect a companion 18-story office building. Both of those plots currently have single-story industrial buildings.

Plans drawn up by SOM that were submitted to the city show 345 to be… a disappointingly generic suburban-style office building clocking in at 178 feet tall. Those plans are just black-and-white, so let’s hope this rabbit has some magic that will reveal itself in the renderings.
1000 is a little more spicy, taking the appearance of four stacked boxes rising less than 300 feet. Again, not exactly groundbreaking, but an improvement over what it’s replacing.
If you want to see what’s coming for yourself, head to the Chicago Public Library at 122 North Aberdeen Street on Tuesday (July 9, 2019) at 6pm.
