A blow-out proposal for a residential skyscraper to replace the Cassidy Tire warehouse in Chicago’s Fulton River District is ready to roll into the Chicago Plan Commission.

While many skyscraper development plans get deflated in high-pressure negotiations with retread politicians, shock — 344 North Canal is groovy, and has strutted from its December mounting to Thursday’s Commission meeting white walls intact.
That means that, if approved, The Habitat Company building will have 343 apartments and 124 parking spaces across 33 stories. It also means a change to traffic patterns in the area, with Clinton and Canal Streets becoming one-way affairs, and Milwaukee Avenue turning into local access only between them.
