River North Parking Lot Eyed For Redevelopment

There could soon be 71 fewer places to park in River North. A soil sampling rig was spotted at 320 West Erie Street today, and you know what that means — incoming building!

River North Spy G hit the digits of our tip line to send in the photograph above. You can see a truck from Strata Earth Services in Palatine is on the scene, exploring what lies beneath the bitumen and stripes.

If you’ve been reading this publication for the last 17 years, you know that if someone is laying out folding money for geotechnical survey, they’re interested in doing something important there. Generally, construction starts anywhere from six months to 20 years later, so don’t throw a wobbly just yet.

320 West Erie is zoned DX-5, which means a 130-foot-tall residential building, or a 150-foot-tall commercial building could be planted there without having to do too much genuflecting in City Hall. Any more than that may involve more ring kissing than a meeting of the Vatican’s College of Cardinals.

We’ll keep an eye on this. And if you see anything curious happening around town, be sure to let us know.
