LG Proposes Five-Tower Complex Near Fulton Market

People who want to live near downtown, and be right up against an active L line can thank their Lucky-Goldstars that LG Development is proposing a new five-tower development on both sides of the Lake Street L, between May and Racine.

We told you about space-making for the southern part of this project… wait for it… 63 months ago. A year before that, the Chicago Plan Commission approved a Nobu hotel and restaurant for this space. That project ended up moving down the street.

On the north side of the tracks, the current proposal includes an 18-story, and a 19-story tower, sharing a one-story podium. On the south side of the tracks, there will be a 14-, a 22-, and a 29-story tower, sharing a four-story podium.

Because these tower forms are all joined, in reality it’s just two buildings. One north, and one south. But visually, they will appear to be a handful of independent buildings:

  • North towers
    • 18-story tower
      • Roof height: 178 feet
      • Maximum height: 193 feet
    • 19-story tower
      • Roof height: 193 feet
      • Maximum height: 222 feet
    • Podium height: 24 feet
  • South towers
    • 14-story tower
      • Roof height: 166 feet, eight inches
      • Maximum height: 176 feet, four inches
    • 22-story tower
      • Roof height: 230 feet
      • Maximum height: 250 feet
    • 29-story tower
      • Roof height: 311 feet, eight inches
      • Maximum height: 330 feet
    • Podium height: 55 feet

Clearly, LG envisions this being a very restaurant-heavy development, as the plans indicate a number of semi-public outdoor seating areas, some within alleys, and even in the shadow of the Green and Pink Lines.

In other parts of Chicago, such as the North Damen corridor, LG is well known as a prolific swinger of hammers in retail circles, so it’s not surprising that this snack sack is packed with 37,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.
