West Loop’s Homewood Suites/Hampton Inn Reaches The Top

The combination Homewood Suites/Hampton Inn at 108 North Jefferson Street has risen as high as it will go in the West Loop. Jupiter Realty broke ground on the project back in April of 2015, in a neighborhood between the Chicago River and Kennedy Expressway short on hotel rooms. When Power Construction is finished, the Homewood Suites ledger will include 128 rooms, while Hampton Inn will house 210 rooms. (That’s 338 rooms total,...

Demolition Crews Tear Into 156 North Jefferson Street

Over the past three weeks, you’ve told you here and here about the new residential project happening at what is now 156 North Jefferson Street in the West Loop, and what will become 165 North Des Plaines Street. Thanks to a couple visits from friends and readers to our Tip Line, we knew to be on the lookout for some demolition work to the rear portions of the North Jefferson address. And pay attention is what we did. Crews from...

Homewood Suites/Hampton Inn Begins Stocking New Glassware

No, we haven’t been given special access to the hospitality services at the new combination Homewood Suites/Hampton Inn going up at 108 North Jefferson Street in the West Loop. But what’s clear to anyone passing by are the new windows that have been installed along the building’s 6th (5th?) floor. While differing slightly from the all-glass facades of so many Chicago structures being built, glass is glass here at...

Homewood-Hampton Begins Rising Above Jefferson Street

Due to its geographic proximity to our West Loop bureau, the combination Homewood Suites-Hampton Inn being erected at 108 North Jefferson Street has become something of an office pet here at The Chicago Architecture Blog. Wandering a block north during lunch hour makes for a nice little break from the everyday routine. Plus, if we snap a few photos, that lunch bill instantly becomes a nice write-off. Recently, we upsized our combo...

Status Update: Homewood-Hampton Taking Shape in West Loop

When Gotham City found itself in trouble, it’d illuminate the Bat Signal, alerting Batman all was not well with the world. Here at The Chicago Architecture Blog, we look to the sky for signs of construction, not trouble. In our city, we have Progress, with a capital P, which rhymes with C, and that stands for Construction. And nothing points the way to an exciting construction project like a big honking crane stretching for the...

Status Update: JeffJack Building in the West Loop

A long time reader, and new tipster, sent in these great pictures of 601 West Jackson under construction in the West Loop. When we drove by a few weeks ago, nothing could be seen from the street because of the construction barriers. But since then the building has grown, and our tipster was able to provide an elevated view for us just before the concrete for the fourth floor. When complete, 601 West Jackson will offer 198 apartments...

Status Update: Hyatt Place on Franklin

One of The Loop’s new hotels is about to round the corner from hole in the ground to recognizable shape. Loop Spy Marilyn sent in these photo of construction at the Hyatt Place at 28 North Franklin Street will transform a surface parking lot into a 18-story hotel with 206 rooms positioned between Chicago’s two financial hubs: LaSalle Street and Wacker Drive. Downtown Chicago has been a hotel magnet recently, with nearly a...

Hotel Sandwich Proposed for the West Loop

For a simple parking lot, the space at 108 North Jefferson Street goes through more mood swings than Robin Williams on a Starbucks jag. When we first met the property, it was going to be the home of a shiny new condo block. When the market tanked, gears shifted and it was pegged as an apartment building. As the recession dragged on, it was re-imagined as a modest office tower. And now it has finally made the transition to the newly...

New West Loop Apartment Block to Break Ground This Month

Half a year ago we brought you the story of 601 West Jackson, the 15-story residential block intended for the southwest corner of  West Jackson Boulevard and South Jefferson Street in the West Loop.  Now it looks like those drawings are going to become reality. Globe Street reports that developers Dan Moceri, Oak Residential Partners, and Thomas Roszak plan to break ground on the building this month, and hope to have it finished by...

More West Loop Infill: Another Residential Block to Replace a Surface Parking Lot

Another surface parking lot in the West Loop is going to become history. JeffJack Investments wants to build an 15-story building on the southwest corner of West Jackson Boulevard and South Jefferson Street. For now, the building is just using its street address as a name: 601 West Jackson. Designed by Chicago’s Thomas Roszak Architecture, the L-shaped building will have 198 apartments over 6,500 square feet of retail space and...
