Dead Skyscraper Will Rise Again: 111 West Wacker Construction About To Get Serious

It’s been months since we first got the good news that the ghost skyscraper known as Waterview Tower had been bought by a new company that planned to resurrect it as 111 West Wacker Drive.  During those months we’ve been treated to new signs, the occasional hardhat sighting, and a whole lot of evocative concrete drilling noises. Now, as the kids say, “things are gonna get real.”  On Wednesday (January 30,...

Status Update: Ten Glimmers of Hope at 111 West Wacker

The long, sad story of 111 West Wacker Drive is finally turning a corner. In 2005 we were expecting a 92-story, 1,047-foot-tall slender tower of shimmering wonder along the Chicago River.  Today, we’re making do with the current proposal: 59 stories.  630 feet.  But a skyscraper sized to match its neighbors is better than the 25-story hulk of an abandoned parking garage we’ve been staring at for the last six years. Now,...

Status Update: A Crane Flies Along The Coast

Workers on Monday started taking down the tower crane that helped build The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) for the last year or so. The glazing crew has one full floor left into which to insert windows, plus the mechanical floor at the top. In all, bKL and Magellan’s The Coast turned out to be a pretty nice looking building. It’s deceptively tall, striking without being overbearing, and pretty without being flashy....

The Height of the Coast

As they say in the upper Midwest, “That’s all the further she goes!” The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) has officially topped out, according to a post on bKL Architects Facebook page.  The building has 46 residential stories on top of five floors of parking.  The photo above shows the Coast and its great view over Navy Pier (600 East Grand Avenue).  In terms of visual height, the Coast ended up about two stories...

Status Update: The Coast

The Coast continues to rise at 345 East Wacker Drive, on the edge of the Lakeshore East development.  Now that it’s mostly put together, it turns out to be quite a nice looking building.  BKL Architecture promised us balconies that weren’t distracting the way balconies so often are, and it looks like mission accomplished.  And the glassy skin on the east and west facades does a nice job of remaining light, airy, and even...

111 West Wacker: Then and Now

After we published our article about the new plan for 111 West Wacker going before the city on June 21st, we received a request from Don Dobrez Jr. on our Facebook feed: Would be nice to see a side by side comparison with the original plan Sure.  We can do that. Here’s that magic slidey thing that we used in our story last year New Flagship Starbucks Cuts Wood, Stacks Bricks to illustrate changes to the new Starbucks on Rush...

Waterview Tower Bubbles Back To Life

For years it’s been the subject of speculation, rumor, innuendo, and wishful thinking.  Now the building at 111 East Wacker Drive formerly known as the Waterview Tower is finally coming back to life. Since construction stopped in 2007 on what was supposed to be a 92-story hotel and condo tower, there’s been a 25-story shell of a parking garage sitting in the middle of one of Chicago’s most prominent skyscraper row....

Coast Crane Jumps the Swissôtel

While you were enjoying Sunday doing whatever it is that you do on Sundays, the team at The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) was busy raising its tower crane.  One of our Lakeshore East spies sent us a picture and you can see the men hard at work in the photo above.  The crane is now just slightly taller than the neighboring Swissôtel (323 East Wacker Drive), which makes us think that The Coast will end up slightly shorter in height....

Briefly: Wacker, Wolford, Wrenters

The new Wolford store in the Shops at North Bridge (520 North Michigan Avenue) opened on Friday (January 6th, 2012). Last Thursday we saw CDOT workers putting up new signs in preparation for Stage Three of the Wacker Drive reconstruction.  The changes go into effect today (Monday, January 9, 2012) and it means traffic and transit pattern changes in the Loop and West Loop.  If you go through this area, you’ll want to get the...
