Pix: Inside the new Loews Chicago Hotel

Ribbons were cut yesterday at the new Loews Chicago Hotel (455 North Park Drive) in Streeterville, and if you follow our Twitter and Facebook feeds (hint hint), you were among the first to see it happen, because Chicago Architecture Blog photographer Milosh Kosanovich was there. Today, we bring you the rest of his photographs showing the interior of Chicago’s newest hotel, which anchors downtown’s newest skyscraper.  ...

Streeterville Skyscraper Comes to Life as New Loews Hotel Opens

We’ve been following the development of the Loews Hotel tower (435 North Park Drive) in Streeterville since back when it was just a sketch on paper and a pile of dirt. Today, amid much fanfare, the hotel finally opened to the public. Chicago Architecture Blog photographer Milosh Kosanovich was there to document the event. Look for more photos of the hotel’s interior features and finishes soon.     Location: 435...

Status Update: Loews Getting Higher

We love seeing your cameraphone pictures from around town.  And when we get two different people in two different neighborhoods taking pictures of the same building under construction, you know there’s something going on. Here are the latest snaps of 435 North Park Drive in Streeterville, more colloquially known as the Loews Hotel Tower.  The photos sent in by our Streeterville Spy and Loop Spy Andy show the tower portion has...

Status Update: Loews and Behold

Streeterville’s newest skyscraper continues sprouting skyward. The Lowes Hotel tower (435 North Park Drive) has grown talk enough that its possible to get a sense of its visual impact on the area. The building’s main shaft is rising to the east of the tower crane installed a few months ago. The remainder of the building will be of lesser stature and contain ballrooms and meeting rooms and back-of-the-house functions for...

The Loews Hotel tower is growing by leaps and bounds.  The plot of land across the street from the Sheraton Hotel and Tower (301 East North Water Street) in Streeterville is a beehive of activity, with much of the foundation taking shape, and the elevator core already rising to the level of Upper North Water Street. When complete, the complex will include 400 hotel rooms, 398 apartment, and 230 parking spaces.  Plus ballrooms, meeting...

Status Update: A New High For Streeterville’s Loews Hotel Tower

The new Loews Hotel going up at 435 North Park Drive now has a tower crane — a significant step towards its climb to 53 stories and 635 feet. We took the photo above just before the crane went up, and then received the photos below from one of our Streeterville Spies just yesterday. When completed, the SCB-designed building will have 398 apartments over 400 hotel rooms.  It is one of only two buildings in the last few years...

Status Update: 435 North Park Drive

The hotel and residential tower going up at 435 North Park Drive in Streeterville is once again going up. Drilling work has begun for the caissons the building will rest on across the street from the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers (301 East North Water Drive).  When completed, the building will be 53-stories and 635-feet-tall.  It’s a far cry from the 1,200-foot Waldorf-Astoria tower originally planned for this location, but...

Radioactive Dirt Halts Construction on Residential Tower and Hotel

Construction has stopped on the residential skyscraper and hotel being built at 435 North Park Drive in the Streeterville neighborhood.  It’s another victim of the radioactive legacy of the Lindsay Light Company. Just weeks ago we took pictures of heavy machinery getting the site ready for construction.  But like many construction projects in the Streeterville, Gold Coast, and Loop neighborhoods, extra caution must be taken...

Nearby Development Is No Salvation For Ogden Plaza

A strip of urine-soaked concrete, and scraggly trees in the heart of Streeterville will remain closer to urban blight than urban paradise for the foreseeable future. Ogden Plaza was reconstructed as recently as 1990 in a design by Lohan Associates. Its centerpiece is a giant clock sculpture by Vito Acconci that counter-intuitively does not function as a sundial. There had been hope that new development bordering Ogden Plaza (429 North...

Neighbors Want Taller Skyscrapers in Streeterville

The new apartment and hotel tower planned for 435 North Park Drive in Streeterville is evolving, and moving closer to reality. Responding to the concerns of neighbors, changes have been made to the as-yet unbranded hotel inside the as-yet unnamed building. For the most part, those changes are minor, and perhaps reflecting the neighborhood’s growing comfort with being the glass tower capital of Chicago, a recent public meeting on...
