Planned Loop Tower Two Stories Shorter, and 40% Closer to Reality

It’s been a year and a half since Crain’s Chicago Business let the cat out of the bag about 50 East Randolph Street. Back then, the Thomas Roszak proposal was expected to replace a grungy parking garage with what was speculated to be a 27-story residential tower. Our guess was 35 to 40 stories, and we were totally wrong. May 2019 rendering of 50 East Randolph (Courtesy of the Office of Alderman Brendan Reilly) Forty-second...

Status Update: 73 East Lake Street

This will likely be our last status update for 73 East Lake Street.  We’ve watched over the last few years as the property went from an Enterprise Rent-a-Car garage to an idea on paper called “The Summit on the Lake” to a sandy lot to a shiny new residential skyscraper.  Now we get word via the press release below that the first people are moving in to 73, so we can pretty much stick a fork in this one, because...

Status Update: 73 East Lake Buttoned Up

It’s been a while since we last checked in on progress at 73 East Lake Street, and it looks like they’ve got the skin of the building pretty much buttoned up.  The concrete pedestrian barrier and scaffolding have been removed from the front of the tower and the incredibly thin building is starting to look like it’s always been there. Even though we miss the super nice Enterprise employees who used to run the skanky...

Status Update: It’s All About Timing at 73 East Lake Street

Loop Spy Daniel sent in another one of his amazing photos of the construction of 73 East Lake Street.  But, as he notes, timing is everything. They took the coldest day of the year so far to start installing plants on the roof. I guess those plants have to live through all of Chicago’s weather. 73’s not the only downtown Chicago tower that embarked on a major horticultural adventure amid such chilly temperatures.  Aon...

Status Update: 73 East Lake Gets All Buttoned Up

The crane is down, the glass is up, and construction crews are getting things buttoned up on the exterior of 73 East Lake Street before the cold weather sets in. Loop Spy Daniel sent over an updated photo of the construction effort, and we can see work progressing on the rooftop common areas.  There’s no green roof yet, but at least there’s a flag pole bolted to the elevator penthouse. Leasing starts in six months. This...

Status Update: The Skinny on 73 East Lake

The ever-so-skinny residential tower wedged into the former site of an Enterprise Rent-a-Car garage at 73 East Lake Street is starting to look really slick. The glass facade is quickly spreading up the tower’s narrow shaft as it climbs higher into The Loop skyline. Of course, the photo above was taken from ground-level. Loop Spy Daniel sent along an updated photograph of the construction progress from the sky.You can really see...

Status Update: 73 East Lake From Above

Blog reader Daniel W. sent in these photos of the progress being made on 73 East Lake Street from the 42nd floor of 205 North Michigan Avenue.  Now that much of the construction is concentrated on the building’s skinny tower, it’s gaining height very quickly. When it’s done, the building will be 42 stories tall with 332 apartments.  Leasing is expected to start by April, 2014. This article is the result of photos...

Status Update: 73 East Lake

One of our Loop Spies sent in new photos of the construction progress at 73 East Lake Street.  The building’s slender tower is really climbing quickly these days and has passed the height of the neighboring Lake-Michigan Building (180 North Michigan Avenue).  In addition, you can see in Loop Spy’s photos that a few rows of glass have been put in place in the residential portion of the building.  Progress! RMK hopes to open...

73 East Lake Street Skyscraper Breaks Ground

Construction of the Loop’s newest residential tower is officially underway. Work on 73 East Lake Street (formerly The Summit on the Lake) has actually been happening for several weeks.  But now that the underground portion of the building is done, the tower crane is in place, and the building is ready to become part of the Chicago skyline, an official groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning. M&R...

Status Update: 73 East Lake Street

The smelly urine-soaked old buildings are gone, and work has begun on the foundations of 73 East Lake Street, the SCB-designed tower that will wrap around the MDA City Apartments with a 42-story tower and parking garage. Here you can see a load of metal pipes being delivered to the site, possibly for caissons. You can read all about the new building in our previous coverage: Green Light for New Loop Skyscraper and Office...
