Status Update: 2950 North Sheridan Now Underway

When we visited the site of the new, curvy residential tower at 2950 North Sheridan Road two weeks ago, it looked more like a campground than construction zone. In these urban environs, stumbling upon a heaping mound of firewood isn’t commonplace. But of course, what those neatly-stacked logs symbolized was the clearing of land for the next Lake View East neighborhood project by architect Booth Hansen. Wirtz Realty is building...

Status Update: 171 North Halsted Begins Blocking View of Cool “Breakout” Wall

The new, wonderfully-curved residential tower at Lake Street and North Halsted is taking shape in West Town. We zipped over to have a look, and it’s already risen 5 stories above the street. When the Booth Hansen design is complete, it will have (depending on which document filed with the city turns out to be final) 28-30 stories, with 214-227 residences. Another thing it will have is the ability to completely obstruct our view...

Booth Hansen Throws a Curveball in Lake View East

Remember when the design was released for the new skyscraper at 171 North Halsted and the heavens opened up, and there was the blaring of trumpets and harps, and angels descended from the sky, and $18.99/dozen roses sprouted in all the vacant lots across the city of Chicago because finally, finally a tower was going to be built that wasn’t a big tall rectangle on top of a little squatty rectangle? Well, it’s about to...

Status Update: The Curve on the Kennedy

It was with a great sigh of relief that architecture enthusiasts greeted the design of 171 North Halsted Street when it was presented to the public just about a year ago.  Well, keep exhaling because the building you loved on paper is well on its way to becoming a concrete and steel reality. The Chicago Architecture Blog’s Daniel Schell went a calling recently and found the hardware store that was once there is long gone, the...

Coveted New Row Houses Coming to Downtown Chicago

You don’t have to be a real estate broker to know that townhouses and graystones in downtown Chicago are among the most highly-desired properties in the midwest.  Just watch a few of the seemingly hundreds of episodes of House Hunters on HGTV and you’ll see dozens of aspirational 20- and 30-something couples lusting after  historic-looking, small-scale urban dwellings in the heart of the city.  Of course, with scarcity...

City Hammers Restoration Hardware Over Three Arts Building

The plan to open a Restoration Hardware inside the historic Three Arts Club (1300 North Dearborn Parkway) in Chicago’s Gold Coast isn’t going anywhere for now. The Chicago Landmarks commission failed to approve the retailer’s plan to renovate the long-vacant building into a home goods store.  The proposal has been sent back to the landmarks committee for further discussion. The sticking point is that Restoration...

New West Town Tower Liked by Neighbors, the Savior of a Beloved Bank

Last night, residents of Greektown, West Town, and the West Loop gave a collective thumb’s up to the new residential tower proposed for the intersection of Lake and Halsted Streets. The skyscraper, which is currently using the name 171 North Halsted, will replace a dilapidated hardware store and provide much-needed apartments in an area where the residents have traditionally been wary of  those of us with transient lifestyles....

Here We Grow Again! Big Curving Tower Coming to Halsted Corridor

How hot is the downtown Chicago residential market?  So hot it could have a physicist explain it on the television show Nova.  The P.B.S. version, not the weak Fox reboot. To wit, the new residential tower proposed for the corner of West Lake Street and North Halsted Street in West Town.  Crain’s Chicago Business has the scoopage on the building currently known as 171 North Halsted, and says it’s a joint project...
