Checking in on The Sinclair’s Little Brother

When the residential tower at 1200 North Clark known as The Sinclair went up four years ago, people were dazzled by its size, scope, and the fact that combined with other regenerative projects in the area, it was going to transform a semi-gritty corner of Chicago.  But what most people didn’t notice in all the hullabaloo  is that The Sinclair plan came with a little buddy across the street at 1201 North Clark.  That project is...

The Most Chicago Photo of the Week

Every now and again a photograph is able to summarize a city.  For Los Angeles it could be a palm tree reflected in sunglasses.  For New York, any number of images of the Statue of Liberty.  For Chicago, we nominate the picture below, taken by Joe Zekas at YoChicago!: On the surface, it’s just another construction shot of The Sinclair going up in the city’s Gold Coast.  But there’s more to it than that.  It captures...

Fifield and SCB’s Sinclair Over-Achieves in the Gold Coast

The most visible sign of the rejuvenation of the corner of Clark and Division Streets is the new Sinclair tower rising where a Jewel supermarket used to sprawl across half a city block.  The new SCB-designed tower includes a bigger, better Jewel in the parking podium.  Fifield’s building is also expected to have 390 apartments, ranging from modest 500-square-foot studios up to 2,400-square-foot, four-bedroom penthouses at the...

Jewel Roughed as Market Moves for Sinclair

It was just a few days ago we told you that demolition crews were poised to take a bite out of the former Jewel-Osco supermarket at 1200 North Clark Street.  Well, they’re certainly not wasting any time. Gold Coast Spy Joel hit the ol’ tip line with the photo above showing how quickly it’s possible to turn a grocery store into a cleanup on aisle infinity.  Those wide column-free spans aren’t just good for...

Work Officially Underway on The Sinclair

Word came in this morning that site prep work is underway at The Sinclair, the Gold Coast project that will replace the run down old Jewel-Osco at Clark and Division Streets with a shiny new Jewel-Osco plus a 35-story residential tower. We went by the site just a few nights ago and saw construction equipment snuggled up around the base of the neighboring residential block, bathed in the soothing glow of sodium light. Clean-Up On All Aisles

Would you like to haul your rubble away in paper or plastic? Eager Gold Coasters have been waiting to ask that question for months, and now may finally be the time. On Tuesday the 8th, the City of Chicago issued a demolition permit for 1210 North Clark Street that reads, simply, “WRECK AND REMOVE A 1 STORY BRICK BUILDING.” Of course, that would be the site of the shuttered-since-June Jewel-Osco store at Clark and Division....

Jewel Tower Scans With Plan Commission, Heads to City Hall’s Express Checkout

Just hours after the general public was given its first taste of the proposed new skyscraper and supermarket planned for the Gold Coast, the Chicago Plan Commission scanned it, threw it in a plastic bag and sent it off to the full city council for its rubber stamp of approval. It was just 44 hours and 18 minutes earlier that a packed crowd of neighbors gathered at the Thompson Hotel to see pictures of the proposed development at 1200...

Gold Coast’s New Jewel Tower Gets Roughed

When the final audience speaker of the evening praises Chicago’s NIMBY attitude for keeping the city honest and inhabitable, it might be hard to get a good read on the proceedings of a community meeting. Nevertheless, Tuesday evening a capacity room debated the merits and drawbacks of the new Jewel flagship store and 390-unit apartment tower proposed to replace the existing Gold Coast store at 1200 North Clark Street. The...
