Status Update: River Point

River Point, the future western bookend of the main branch of the Chicago River is more than two-thirds of the way to its eventual maximum number of floors, according to photographs sent in by Loop Spy Michael. When complete, the Pickard Chilton-designed building at 444 West Lake Street will rise to 52 stories.  Its elevator core is currently around the 35-story mark, and growing, a dramatic presence in the Fulton River District.  But...

Slice of Life: This is How We Skyscraper

The internet is full of angry, terrible people saying mean, horrible things.  It’s a phenomenon that happens because the internet allows ordinary people to say whatever they want with no accountability, and it also gives the voices of sociopaths and lunatics equal footing with the voices of the best people society has to offer. One of the side-effects I see all the time is “my city is better than your city”...

Status Update: River Point Starting to Grow

River Point (444 West Lake Street) is starting to take off.  The future 52-story skyscraper’s concrete core has reached about level nine, according to the photograph sent in this morning by Fulton River District Spy Mike.  When finished, the tower hard against North Canal Street will climb 730 feet into the sky, gazing directly down the main channel of the Chicago River. In exchange for the sunsets that used to be visible from...

Status Update: River Point Rises, Sans Promised Park

Remember when it was promised that the office tower portion of River Point wouldn’t be built until the public park was finished?  Yeah, neither does the developer. The Chicago Architecture Blog’s Daniel Schell ambled by the construction site at 444 West Lake Street recently and took these pictures of the tower portion rising on the corner on West Lake and North Canal Streets.  Right now the steel frame is about three or...

2-for-1 Status Update: Getting The Points

Loop Spy Daniel scored with a few fantastic new photos of the confluence of the Chicago River’s main and north branches.  In one panorama, you can see the construction at both Wolf Point West (326 North Orleans Street) and River Point (444 West Lake Street). Wolf Point West had its belated ceremonial groundbreaking last Friday.  The tower, designed by friends-of-the-blog bKL Architecture, has been under construction for months...

Point’s Public Park Positively Progressing

The public park portion of the River Point development (444 West Lake Street) is really coming together. Walking by the other day, it’s easy to imagine how it will integrate into the rest of the city, with the elevators, ramps and staircases already mostly built.  One of our spies was over there recently and sent in these great pictures that not only show the park’s progress, but also the interior of the completed rail...

Status Update: Walling in the Chicago River

Look beyond the snow.  Beyond the ice.  And you can see the progress being made on River Point, the public park and eventual office building being built along the Chicago River at 444 West Lake Street. What used to be an expanse of train tracks, a gravel parking lot, and a bunch of weeds is now a long, low wall punctuated by portholes.  This is the base of the park, which must be completed before the 49-story office skyscraper is...

Status Update: River Point

The base of River Point (444 West Lake Street) is really coming together. Train traffic has been enclosed in inside a concrete bunker, complete with a crash wall, and now facing the Chicago River is a wall punctuated with round windows, reminiscent of a nautical theme. River Point isn’t the only building on the river with that theme.  Just across the water, 225 West Wacker also features circular portholes, as does 333 Wacker. In...

Status Update: Tunnel Vision in the West Loop

The train tunnel that is an integral part of the River Point development (444 West Lake Street) is chugging toward completion. We got to see the inside of the tunnel a few days ago, and the thing that struck us most was how clean and well lit it is.  But with hundreds of massive diesel engines lumbering through each day, don’t expect it to stay that way. Our Fulton River Spy sent in this picture yesterday, showing progress on...

Status Update: River Point’s Rail Tunnel

Fulton Rive r Spy Alex sent over this great picture of the construction of River Point (444 East Lake Street).  You can really see how wide the Amtrak tunnel beneath the future River Point Park is.  You may remember that Amtrak required the tunnel be a little extra wide so there will be room for a future high speed rail line into Union Station. The entirety of that deck will be park space.  Then on the left you can see an area...
