The Backstory on bKL – The Young Chicago Firm Leading the Pack on Wolf Point

In Chicago’s lexicon of TLA’s (three-letter acronyms), it’s not as commonly spoken as LSD, UIC, or ORD. But in architecture circles it may soon be as well-known as SOM, or SCB.  It’s bKL, the shiny new architecture firm with shiny new offices, a shiny new staff, and a couple of shiny new buildings that are going to help put it on the map. The big commission is none other than the west tower of Wolf Point (316...

Status Update: A Crane Flies Along The Coast

Workers on Monday started taking down the tower crane that helped build The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) for the last year or so. The glazing crew has one full floor left into which to insert windows, plus the mechanical floor at the top. In all, bKL and Magellan’s The Coast turned out to be a pretty nice looking building. It’s deceptively tall, striking without being overbearing, and pretty without being flashy....

The Height of the Coast

As they say in the upper Midwest, “That’s all the further she goes!” The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) has officially topped out, according to a post on bKL Architects Facebook page.  The building has 46 residential stories on top of five floors of parking.  The photo above shows the Coast and its great view over Navy Pier (600 East Grand Avenue).  In terms of visual height, the Coast ended up about two stories...

Status Update: The Coast

The Coast continues to rise at 345 East Wacker Drive, on the edge of the Lakeshore East development.  Now that it’s mostly put together, it turns out to be quite a nice looking building.  BKL Architecture promised us balconies that weren’t distracting the way balconies so often are, and it looks like mission accomplished.  And the glassy skin on the east and west facades does a nice job of remaining light, airy, and even...

Looking at Lakeshore East

One of the very first posts we put on this blog almost ten years ago showed the early days of the development of Lakeshore East.  Back then the area that would become downtown Chicago’s newest master planned community was just a big dirt lot as bulldozers transformed a temporary golf course into an urban oasis. But ten years ago is nothing in comparison with the overall time that Lakeshore East has been on the drawing boards....

Coast Crane Jumps the Swissôtel

While you were enjoying Sunday doing whatever it is that you do on Sundays, the team at The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) was busy raising its tower crane.  One of our Lakeshore East spies sent us a picture and you can see the men hard at work in the photo above.  The crane is now just slightly taller than the neighboring Swissôtel (323 East Wacker Drive), which makes us think that The Coast will end up slightly shorter in height....

Status Update: The Coast is Clear

Lakeshore East’s newest skyscraper continues to grow. The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) has cleared the top level of the triple-decker street and is now headed skyward, obliterating the views of hundreds of people in Aqua (225 North Columbus Drive), The Tides (360 East South Water Street), and the Swissôtel (323 East Wacker Drive). The building will eventually reach 45 stories of apartment homes. Previous coverage: Status...

Status Update: The Coast

Magellan Development’s latest water-named tower is progressing nicely.  The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive) is going up in Lakeshore East, obliterating the lake and city views of thousands of people in the Swissôtel, The Tides, The Shoreham, and Aqua. The Coast is a 45-story apartment tower, and just the latest piece of a massive puzzle transforming a former urban golf course into a vibrant community.  You can read a lot more...

Crane’s Up, and The Coast is Clear at Lakeshore East

Construction is underway at the newest skyscraper at the Lakeshore East subdivision of the New Eastside portion of the Loop neighborhood of Chicago. A crane has been erected for The Coast (345 East Wacker Drive), a $150 million, 45-story residential tower scheduled to obliterate most lake views from Aqua (430 East Waterside Drive) by 2013. See our previous coverage of The Coast here: New Pictures of Proposed Lakeshore East Tower More...

Lakeshore East’s Newest Skyscraper Gets a Name

I’ve been super busy this week with a photography assignment on the South Side* and have barely been checking my e-mail.  That’s why I missed the tip from our Lakeshore East spy that Magellan Development’s building formerly known as Building A is now known as The Coast. More importantly, groundbreaking has taken place for the new residential tower at 345 East Wacker Drive, right next to the Swissôtel.   If the...
